The saying of J.P. Morgan that “the first step towards getting somewhere is to decide you’re not going to stay where you are” is often repeated as a mantra of personal growth. While success can come in many forms, it always starts with the same basic principle – taking action. Whether it’s finally starting that business, pursuing the next career goal, or simply staying motivated throughout our day-to-day lives, the first step involves making a conscious decision to leave our current state of comfort and take on new challenges.
Making this decision does not mean abandoning what we have currently achieved or compromising our values and beliefs; rather it is simply an acknowledgement that in order to get where we want to be, we must be open to change and growth. We must be willing to challenge ourselves and push past the boundaries of our comfort zone if we have any hope of achieving something greater.
The rewards for doing so are immense – feeling more powerful in one’s decisions and actions, increased self-confidence and ultimately having fewer regrets about missed opportunities later in life. Taking this plunge also helps us learn more about ourselves which can lead us closer towards finding true contentment with our lives.
Ultimately, deciding not to stay where you are is just the beginning – but it’s certainly an important one! By recognising that there is always room for improvement, you become empowered by taking control of your own fate and actively work towards becoming the person you want to be.
